Online Dating Tips: Why You Should Post an Online Dating Profile

by Evangelista Shelton

The Questions

If you decide to pursue dating online, it will require you to set up an online dating profile.

What does this mean? Well, basically, the online dating website that you have chosen will generally look to you tell your potential suitors or ladies a little bit about yourself.

What are you looking for in that potential someone? Are you looking for a long-term or short-term relationship? Are you punctual or always late? Are you a homebody or do you like to paint the town? Do you like to cook? Do you like to travel? What are your religious beliefs? What are your political beliefs? Do you have kids? Have you ever been married? What are you not looking for in a potential mate?

Depending on the website, there may be more than one hundred questions to be answered as many of the questions are intended to scope out your personality and to aid you in finding your 'perfect match.' Be aware that it is highly likely that in some instances, you it will take more than one sitting to get through the questions.

Can you skip this part and simply post your picture online? Yes, you could solely choose to post your photo online however, this means interactions will solely be based on your looks --which may or may not be a good thing.

Tell Me about Yourself

While someone’s appearance may be the thing that draws one individual to another individual initially, most people genuinely look for that person they have something in common with or in some instances, they purposefully choose someone who is the polar opposite. As previously written in my other online dating series tips about posting online dating site profile photos and 'Navigating the Online Flirt', mystery is good but keep in mind that if your photo is the only thing you are to be measured by…it may or may not garner you the attention you are seeking.

You’re probably thinking…‘I could make up anything about myself and no one would really know if I’m telling the truth or not.’ This is very true and there are any number of articles out there that will tell you how to attract the right person with a eye-catching profile, but ultimately, you still want to be yourself.

Meet the Real Me

There will come a point in time in which you will have to step out of the shadow of your profile and ‘be real.’ It’s kind of like, posting a resume, interviewing for a job, then getting the job. Once you’re hired, you still have to prove you are the person you say that you are and be the right person for the job or else, you’ll be fired. The 'fake it 'til you make it' concept will only get you so far. Except for in the online dating world, you will simply enter a cone of silence once it is determined that you are not the person you say you are.

These are just a few tips to get you going in establishing your online profile.
